About Anna

(Foto by Maria Frodl)
NRW (D) 2022 / Stefan Pieper
“As an encore, Anna Lang pulls out all the stops, transforming a euphoric improvisation into a jubilant song with her fingers positioned high on the fingerboard.”

Imst (A) 2022 / (tamt) “(...) Lang's cello artistry produces sounds that Johann Sebastian Bach would likely never have dared to dream of (...) Anna Lang's cello—a pure delight.”

Anna Lang, born in Salzburg, grew up in a family of artists in Altmünster on Lake Traunsee. She began her musical studies at the age of 15 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and is a graduate of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg (piano), the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (cello), and the A. Bruckner Private University (jazz cello, with honors). Professor Tobias Kühne on cello is her most important musical collaborator.

Anna Lang’s artistic activities include performances as a soloist or bandleader on internationally renowned stages and at festivals, as well as radio recordings for Ö1, Bremen2, and WDR. In numerous ensembles and projects, such as the solo program Colours Of Drama, the Beyond Classic Projects, the percussion–cello duo with Judith Schwarz, and the multi-award-winning Duo Sinfonia de Carnaval with Alois Eberl, Anna Lang performs not only as a versatile cellist but also as a conductor and composer.

With the Duo Sinfonia De Carnaval, Anna Lang and Alois Eberl were nominated for the BAWAG P.S.K. Next Generation Award 2015, selected as one of the top five bands in the jazz category by the Austrian Federal Ministry for the “New Austrian Sound of Music Program 2018/19” and honored as one of seven bands across all contemporary genres with the top grant from the Austrian Federal Chancellery, the international springboard FOCUS ACTS 2019. In April 2024, Anna Lang performed with the duo Sinfonia de Carnaval as Austria’s entry at the European Showcases of jazzahead! Bremen.

The second album, titled “Sweeping Dragon” was released by Preiser Records Vienna. In 2025, the third album—“Human Faces”—will be released on the Neuklang label of the renowned Bauer Studios Ludwigsburg.

Anna Lang has performed at international festivals in Austria, Switzerland, England, Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Croatia, France, Italy, Israel, Palestine, Estonia, Turkey, and Germany.

Anna plays a modern cello built in 2020 by Wiltrud Fauler.

Oö Nachrichten / Juli 2018 / (haun)

"This jazz draws on a wealth of inspiration. (...) Anna Lang and Alois Eberl are two of the most promising talents on the local jazz scene. Lang plays mainly the cello and occasionally the piano—which, by the way, she plays superbly—while Eberl switches between the trombone and the accordion, which he also plays with various mutes to produce truly astonishing variations in sound (....) a wildly acclaimed concert. (....)"

Radiokulturhaus Wien / Juni 2018

“There seem to be no limits to the imagination when Anna Lang and Alois Eberl take the stage, accompanied by a host of fantastical characters, broom-wielders, harlequins, and carnival witches. Musically, the sound is rich and varied, with a colorful ensemble featuring cello, piano, trombone, accordion, and vocals. In just the first three years of its existence, the duo has already gained extensive experience in theater and won awards, and their music is also in a state of constant evolution: most recently toward jazz and improvisation.”

Presse Passau 02/2016/ Chr. Pierach

“(…) wild broom-wielders, light-footed men, carnival witches, and leaping harlequins: Anna Lang and Alois Eberl, Viennese by choice, harmonize magnificently—even in their improvisations—and paint a sonic picture of all these phantoms with their instruments and voices. Painters paint with brushes; Lang and Eberl paint without them at all. (…)”

Radiokulturhaus Wien/2015

(...) Multi-instrumentalists Anna Lang and Alois Eberl present their latest program, “Figuras de baile”—musical short stories from a remarkable duo.

OÖ Nachrichten 12 / 2015

“(...) Anna Lang and Alois Eberl wowed the audience. Alternating between the accordion and trombone (Eberl) and the cello and piano (Lang), they performed a dance of sounds in which they skillfully balanced leadership and tempo. (...)”

OÖ Nachrichten 07 / 2015

“(...) Anna Lang and Alois Eberl wowed the audience. Alternating between the accordion and trombone (Eberl) and the cello and piano (Lang), they performed a dance of sounds in which they skillfully balanced leadership and tempo. (...)”

Profil 01/2015

“Anna Lang is a cellist with the talent and passion to capture moods, images, and colors through sound.”

Kulturzeitschrift Bamberg 01 / 2013

“Cello, piano, or oboe? No problem—Anna Lang can do it all.”

Neues Volksblatt Juli 2011/ G. Szeless

“(…) the enthusiastic audience (…) couldn’t get enough of this concert. (…) The two artists introduced themselves with a cleverly crafted program. They each master two instruments equally well—and to an outstanding degree (…) That alone is a rarity, promising sonic rarities, arrangements, and original compositions when they play together. (…) What else will these imaginative musicians come up with?”
